Gina Peek earned her doctorate from the University of Georgia December 2009 and has been the State Housing and Consumer Specialist for the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service since January 2010. Dr. Peek helps to educate target audiences how maintain their built and near environment. This includes teaching consumers to manage household demands on natural resources most efficiently.

How long have you been a member of AAFCS?
I have been a member of AAFCS since I was a doctoral student at the University of Georgia. My actual join date was 2008.

Why did you join AAFCS?
Sharon Nickols at the University of Georgia mentored me while I was working on my doctorate. As is well know, Dr. Nickols is a stalwart AAFCS supporter.

How has membership in AAFCS been of value to you and your practice?
Absolutely! AAFCS has put me in touch with the broader scope of Family and Consumer Sciences. It has been helpful to how all of the parts of Family and Consumer Sciences combine holistically to solve a variety of human problems.

AAFCS cares about the individual, the community, and the world. On a personal level, AAFCS has improved my life by providing me the opportunity to showcase my research, augment my own professional development, and network with colleagues.

Why did you choose the field of family and consumer sciences?
I chose the field of family and consumer sciences because I wanted more than anything else to become a state specialist with Cooperative Extension. I have achieved this dream thanks to family and consumer sciences!
